General Dynamics to modernize San Antonio class LPD USS Arlington


According to information published by the US DoD on January 18, 2023, General Dynamics NASSCO – Norfolk, Norfolk, Virginia, is awarded a $149,452,553 firm-fixed-price contract action for maintenance, modernization, and repair of USS Arlington (LPD 24).

The scope of this acquisition includes all labor, supervision, facilities, equipment, production, testing, and quality assurance necessary to prepare for and accomplish the CNO Availability for managing critical modernization, maintenance and repair programs.

This contract includes options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this contract to $168,452,352. Work will be performed in Norfolk, Virginia, and is expected to be completed by September 2024.

The USS Arlington (LPD-24) is an amphibious transport dock ship of the United States Navy. It is part of the San Antonio class of ships, which are designed to transport and land Marines, their equipment, and supplies by amphibious assault, helicopter, or by landing craft. The USS Arlington was commissioned in 2013 and is homeported in Norfolk, Virginia.

At 684 feet in length and 105 feet in beam, the USS Arlington is a formidable presence on the water, displacing approximately 25,000 tons. The USS Arlington has a top speed of 22 knots, making it a fast and agile vessel capable of supporting amphibious operations.

The crew of the USS Arlington includes approximately 365 sailors and Marines, who operate the ship's armament, including two 30 mm Close-In Weapon Systems and various small arms.

The USS Arlington is equipped with a flight deck and well deck that can accommodate a variety of helicopters and tilt-rotor aircraft, as well as landing craft.
