The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the US for deploying a nuclear-powered submarine to the Guantanamo Bay military base. The Ministry states that the base no longer holds strategic or military value for the US.

Cuban-US relations

The naval relations between the United States and Cuba have been marked by a mix of cooperation, tension, and standoff, a pattern largely influenced by the broader political context of U.S.-Cuban relations.

After the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the relationship between the two nations deteriorated rapidly, leading to the U.S. embargo and various military confrontations, the most prominent being the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961 and the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. These events significantly affected naval relations between the two countries, causing a high level of naval tensions in the Caribbean Sea.

The U.S. maintains a significant naval presence at Guantanamo Bay, a naval base leased from Cuba. The base has been a point of contention between the two nations.

The Cuban government considers the presence of the U.S. Navy base illegal and has on many occasions called for its closure. Despite this, the U.S. continues to maintain its base due to its strategic importance, and it serves as a crucial hub for U.S. military operations in the Caribbean and beyond.
