These submarines have been developed by the Rubin Central Design Bureau of Marine Engineering, and a contract for the construction of six submarines for the Russian Pacific Fleet was signed in September 2016.

The Admiralty Shipyard has already delivered four Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarines - Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Volkhov, Magadan, and Ufa - to the Pacific Fleet, and in 2021, they laid down the sixth submarine, Yakutsk, alongside the Mozhaisk. The Yakutsk is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy in 2024.

The Project 636.3 Varshavyanka-class submarines, also known as Improved Kilo-II, are third-generation large diesel-electric underwater cruisers that are 74 meters long and displace over 3,900 tons.

With their strong hulls, these submarines can operate at depths of up to 240 meters and can dive to a maximum depth of 300 meters. They have an operational range of up to 7,500 miles and are armed with Kalibr-PL cruise missiles that can be launched from torpedo tubes while submerged.

Considered among the world's quietest underwater cruisers, Project 636 submarines can develop speeds of up to 20 knots, have a sea endurance of 45 days, and have a crew of 52. The Russian Pacific Fleet is expected to receive all Project 636.3 submarines with Kalibr cruise missiles on board by 2024.
