3rd China Navy's aircraft carrier Fujian holds propulsion tests


According to information published by Global Times on April 23, 2023, the aircraft carrier has successfully carried out propulsion and mooring tests prior to its upcoming maiden voyage. To complete the propulsion test, the Fujian will leave dock and conduct a navigation test out in the sea.

The Fujian is a Type 003 aircraft carrier, with a normal displacement of 71,875 tons (70,740 long tons) and a full load displacement of over 80,000 tons (79,000 long tons)

She measures 300 meters (984 feet 3 inches) in length at the waterline and 316 meters (1,036 feet 9 inches) overall, with a beam of 39.5 meters (129 feet 7 inches) at the waterline and 76 meters (249 feet 4 inches) overall.

Its propulsion system consists of steam turbines, 8 boilers, and 4 shafts, providing over 220,000 horsepower (164MW). The aircraft carrier features a hangar deck for aviation operations.

Equipped with an electromagnetic aircraft launch and arrest system, it allows for more efficient and effective aircraft operations compared to its predecessors, the Liaoning and the Shandong. As the navigation test is expected to take place within the year, the Fujian is on track to enter service soon.

Considering China's expansive maritime interests, it is clear that three aircraft carriers will not be sufficient to fulfill the country's needs. In order to effectively deploy and maintain a carrier fleet, multiple carriers are required to account for maintenance, training, and combat readiness missions. As a result, it is likely that China will continue to invest in building new carriers in the future.

Upon entering service, the Fujian is expected to receive new carrier-based aircraft, including advanced fighter jets, fixed-wing drones, and early warning aircraft.
