The ship's journey through the Suez Canal to the Bab al-Mandab Strait hinges on receiving a deployment mandate, as part of the EUNAVFOR Aspides mission aimed at protecting commercial shipping lanes and ensuring freedom of navigation. This mission awaits approval from both the European Union and a mandate from the German Bundestag.

Defence State Secretary Siemtje Möller, present at the ship's departure along with the crew's families and friends in Wilhelmshaven, highlighted Europe's commitment to securing vital trade routes for Germany and Europe through Operation Aspides.

Vice Admiral Jan Christian Kaack, the Navy Inspector, underscored the strategic deployment of the "Hessen" following its recent participation in a NATO maritime group. He stressed the importance of deploying a vessel with the capability and fully trained crew to address potential threats. The frigate has embarked with a crew of about 240, including naval aviators for its helicopters and members of the Marine Battalion.
