Sikorsky finalizes tests on MH-60R Helicopters for Hellenic Navy.

According to a PR published by Lockheed Martin on February 7, 2024, Sikorsky announced the completion of crucial testing for three MH-60R SEAHAWK® helicopters destined for the Hellenic Navy.

These tests, finished in early December 2023, assessed the helicopters' integrated mission systems and sensors, confirming their capabilities for anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare operations from both land and sea platforms.

Greece is now the seventh country to adopt the U.S. Navy’s MH-60R maritime helicopters, following other European nations such as Denmark, which operates nine MH-60R aircraft. Spain and Norway have also joined the list of MH-60R users, with orders for 14 aircraft placed in 2023.

These helicopters are equipped for anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), and search and rescue (SAR) missions. Their advanced sonar systems, such as the AN/AQS-22 airborne low-frequency sonar, enable effective submarine detection, a necessity for monitoring Greece’s maritime borders.

These aircraft are also armed with AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, MK 54 torpedoes, and 3"/.50 caliber guns, allowing them to address surface threats. This capability supports the protection of sea lanes and coastal areas. The helicopters' radar and sensor suite improve situational awareness, facilitating long-range surveillance and reconnaissance.

For SAR operations, the MH-60R is outfitted with a rescue hoist and other equipment, essential for responding to maritime emergencies. Its ability to operate from different naval vessels, including frigates, destroyers, and aircraft carriers, provides operational versatility. Advanced avionics and engines enhance the helicopters' endurance and range, allowing for extended missions over significant maritime distances.
