"Outfitting works are underway on the Viktor Chernomyrdin. The icebreaker is undergoing dockside trials. The equipment, vital systems and mechanisms are being installed and regulated. The construction works are into their final lap now. Performance trials are scheduled for August," Buzakov said.

The United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) received an order for the icebreaker from FGUP Rosmorport enterprise in 2011. It has been built since December 2012 under a contract worth 7.94 billion rubles. The project 22600 icebreaker with a capacity of 25MW will become one of the most powerful non-atomic icebreakers in the world. There are plans to use it on the Northern Sea Route.

A fire broke out onboard the icebreaker in November 2018 when the construction was still going on. As a result, part of the equipment was damaged.
