Russian Navy conducts anti-submarine exercise in Pacific


According to information published by Tass on June 15, 2021, Russian Navy ships and aircraft have started to search for a simulated enemy’s submarines during an exercise in the central part of the Pacific Ocean, the Defense Ministry’s press office said.

The exercise involving up to 20 surface ships, submarines and support vessels, as well as about 20 aircraft is being directed by Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Sergei Avakyants.

According to the press office, shipborne sonars and Kamov Ka-27 (Helix) helicopters taking off from the Project 1155 large antisubmarine warfare (ASW) ship Admiral Panteleyev (Udaloy-class), the Project 1155M frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov and the Project 20380 corvettes Gromky and Hero of the Russian Federation Aldar Tsydenzhapov (Steregushchy-class) are being used. The exercise also involves planes.

The Kamov Ka-27 is a military helicopter developed for the Soviet Navy, and currently in service in various countries including Russia, Ukraine, Vietnam, China, South Korea, and India. Variants include the Ka-29 assault transport, the Ka-28 downgraded export version.

The helicopter was developed for ferrying and anti-submarine warfare. Design work began in 1969 and the first prototype flew in 1973. It was intended to replace the decade-old Kamov Ka-25 and is similar in appearance to its predecessor due to the requirements of fitting in the same hangar space. Like other Kamov military helicopters, it has coaxial rotors, removing the need for a tail rotor. Ka-32 variants, e.g. the Klimov-powered Ka-32A11BC, have been certified for commercial operations throughout the world, notably in Canada and Europe.

The Steregushchiy class, Russian designation Project 20380, is the newest class of corvettes being built for the Russian Navy. Designed by the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau, subsequent vessels were built to an improved design (Project 20381), incorporating the Poliment-Redut SAM system. The export variant is known as Project 20382 Tigr.
