Hensoldt wins contract to provide Mk11 SharpEye radars to Philippines


According to information published by Hensoldt on March 17, 2023, sensor solutions specialist HENSOLDT UK has been awarded two contracts by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) to supply Kelvin Hughes Mk11 SharpEye navigation radars to the Philippine Navy.

The six 2,400-ton Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) and two 3,200-ton Corvettes are currently being built at HHI and will be delivered over the next four years.

The SharpEye Mk11 radars are approved by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and are installed in conjunction with an integrated navigation bridge system. The radars will provide enhanced navigation and surface surveillance capability.

The solid-state SharpEye transceivers are located upmast in a carbon fibre turning unit bringing additional benefits such as ease of installation and high reliability. The use of a direct drive motor system, rather than a traditional antenna rotator gearbox, reduces maintenance costs.

About the OPV

The OPV has a displacement of 2,200 tons, a length of 94.4 meters, and a beam of 14.3 meters. She is powered by four MTU-STX diesel engines in a combined diesel and diesel (CODAD) arrangement, enabling it to achieve a speed of 22 knots at 85% MCR and a range of 5,500 nautical miles at 15 knots.

The vessel carries two rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RHIBs) for operations and is also equipped with a flight deck that can support the launch and recovery of a 10-tonne naval helicopter or unmanned aerial vehicles.

The vessel's sensor and processing systems include a combat management system, 2D air/surface search radar, identification friend or foe (IFF) system, navigation and search radars, and an electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensor. In addition, the vessel is planned to have air warfare data link 16 capabilities and allocation for multi-mission module containers.

The vessel also has electronic warfare and decoys capabilities, with a radar-electronic support measures (R-ESM) system and a countermeasures dispensing system that can deploy two mortar-type decoy launchers. The vessel is armed with one 76mm dual-purpose rapid-fire autocannon, two 30mm autocannons, and two 12.7mm heavy machine guns.
