South Korea Navy holds exercises with aircraft carrier USS Nimitz in response North Korea


According to a tweet published by the South Korean MoD on March 27, 2023, the Republic of Korea Navy's (ROKN) destroyer ROKS Sejong the Great held exercises with the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz near the Jeju Islands in response to North Korea's moves.

The destroyer has a displacement of 8,500 tons in standard configuration and 11,000 tons when fully loaded. It has a length of 166 meters (544 ft 7 in), a beam of 21.4 meters (70 ft 3 in), and a draft of 6.25 meters (20 ft 6 in).

The ship is powered by four General Electric LM2500 COGAG (Combined Gas And Gas) engines, with two shafts providing a total output of 100,000 shp (75 MW) produced power.

She has a top speed that exceeds 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph) and a range of 5,500 nautical miles (10,200 km; 6,300 mi), with an endurance of 30 days. The ship has a complement of 300 crew members.

The ship is equipped with advanced sensor and processing systems, including the AN/SPY-1D(V) multi-function radar, AN/SPG-62 fire control radar, DSQS-21BZ-M hull-mounted sonar, SQR-220K towed-array sonar system, and Sagem Infrared Search & Track (IRST) system. It also has the LIG Nex1 SLQ-200K Sonata electronic warfare suite for electronic warfare and decoy purposes.

In terms of armament, the ship has a 5 inch (127 mm)/L62 caliber Mk 45 Mod 4 naval gun, one 30 mm Goalkeeper CIWS (Close-In Weapon System), one RAM Block 1 CIWS, 16 SSM-700K Haeseong Anti-ship Missiles, two triple torpedo tubes for K745 Blue Shark torpedoes, an 80-cell Mk 41 VLS for SM-2 Block IIIB/IV, and a 48-cell K-VLS for K-ASROC Red Shark and Hyunmoo III land attack cruise missiles.
