Context

The Red Sea has recently seen a significant increase in naval deployments amid escalating regional tensions. Several nations have deployed their warships to the area, responding to various security challenges, including piracy, threats to shipping lanes, and broader geopolitical disputes.

The United Kingdom has dispatched HMS Diamond, a Royal Navy destroyer, to the Red Sea to join a multinational naval force. This force includes ships from the United States, France, and other nations, aiming to ensure the safe passage of international trade by providing presence and reassurance.

This deployment responds to attacks against merchant shipping in the southern Red Sea by Yemeni-based rebels, linked to wider conflict escalations in the Middle East following the outbreak of the Israel/Hamas war. The multinational group's presence seeks to deter further attacks on merchant ships, which have included the use of drones and anti-ship missiles.

In addition to the UK's HMS Diamond, the US Navy has deployed Arleigh Burke-class destroyers USS Carney and USS Mason, along with the French Navy's Aquitaine-class FREMM frigate FS Languedoc, to respond to these security threats. Iran has also made strategic moves in the region by deploying the Alborz destroyer to the Red Sea.
