According to information published by NATO on February 26, 2024, the organization has initiated Exercise Dynamic Manta 24, a training operation focusing on submarine warfare, off the Sicilian coasts.

The exercise involves a variety of naval assets, including ships, submarines, aircraft, and personnel from different member countries, gathering in the Mediterranean Sea for specialized training.
The purpose of Dynamic Manta 24, identified as NATO's key Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) exercise, is to engage in intensive naval tactics that incorporate the latest in submarine technology.
It occurs simultaneously with NATO’s largest exercise, Steadfast Defender, illustrating the organization's capability to manage multiple exercises and missions across the Euro-Atlantic area concurrently.
The exercise aims to equip participating forces with the necessary training to improve interoperability and skills in anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare. It creates a scenario where submarines practice both pursuing and evading, in coordination with air and surface units.
A notable aspect of this year's exercise is the integration of submarine units with Allied maritime Special Operations Forces (SOF), enhancing joint capabilities. This includes a specific operation where a Greek SOF team deploys from an Italian submarine.
Organized by NATO’s Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM), the exercise features six submarines from Greece, France, Italy, Spain, and Türkiye, with the NATO Submarine Command (COMSUBNATO) directing operations as required.
The exercise also includes Maritime Patrol Aircraft and Helicopters from various countries, supported by surface ships from Standing NATO Maritime Group Two (SNMG2). Italy is supporting the exercise by providing access to its naval and air bases, which is crucial for the logistical support of the operation.
