According to information published by the US DoD on April 11, 2024, during a trilateral exercise involving the US, South Korea, and Japan, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers USS Russell (DDG 59) and USS Howard (DDG 83) were seen sailing next to USS Daniel Inouye (DDG 118) and the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71).

In a hypothetical Chinese invasion of Taiwan, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, USS Russell and USS Howard, equipped with the Aegis Combat System, could use their advanced AN/SPY-1 radars for air defense, launching SM-2 and SM-6 missiles to neutralize airborne threats.
Their capabilities in anti-submarine warfare would be crucial, utilizing AN/SQQ-89(V) sonar systems and deploying MH-60R Seahawk helicopters to detect and counteract Chinese submarines.
These destroyers could also engage in surface-to-surface combat using Harpoon missiles against Chinese naval forces and serve as key nodes for command and control, enhancing the coordination of allied forces.
Meanwhile, the USS Theodore Roosevelt, a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, would project significant military power. Its air wing, composed of F/A-18 Super Hornets, could conduct precision strikes against critical invasion targets on both Taiwanese shores and mainland China.
The carrier would also support E-2 Hawkeye aircraft for airborne early warning and control, crucial for coordinating fleet air defenses and monitoring Chinese movements. Additionally, EA-18G Growler aircraft from the carrier could disrupt Chinese radar and communication systems through sophisticated electronic warfare, degrading the effectiveness of Chinese military operations.
