The flagships of the Royal Navy and the Marine nationale are lined up to work side-by-side next year to demonstrate the progress made between the two fleets. The Royal Navy's key deployment of 2012 - which will see the UK Response Force Task Group (UK RFTG) head to the Mediterranean - is due to join forces with the FS Charles de Gaulle and her carrier battlegroup for an exercise that will highlight co-operation between the two navies.

The Colombian Navy placed an order on 20 October for a second OPV-80 offshore patrol vessel (OPV) from the government-run COTECMAR shipyards in Cartagena.

During his official visit to Cherbourg today, Brazilian Minister of Defence Celso Amorim was able to assess the progress of the submarine programme contracted to DCNS at the end of 2008. After being welcomed by DCNS chairman and CEO Patrick Boissier, Mr Amorim visited the workshops where part of the work is being done on this strategic programme, the largest international contract ever signed by DCNS.

Construction begins on Royal Navy's fifth Astute Class submarine
 
The Navy's second hunter-killer submarine in the Astute-class has completed her first dive. HMS Ambush completed the important milestone at Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria ahead of sea trials early next year. More than 70 Ministry of Defence personnel, BAE Systems engineers and Navy staff were involved in the two-day maiden dive, which proved the boat's safety and stability in water.

The main construction phase of the Royal Navy's fifth Astute Class submarine, Anson, officially began today with a traditional keel-laying ceremony attended by Minister for International Security Strategy Gerald Howarth. The ceremony took place at the BAE Systems Submarine Solutions shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, and is a significant step towards the delivery of the latest nuclear-powered attack submarine to the Royal Navy.

The vessel will then undergo a further testing period of four months to test its weapon systems and sensors, prior to its acceptance by the UAE Navy and its commissioning.
