"One of the flight tasks was to fly to the Arctic Ocean regions where the Il-38 anti-submarine aircraft trained to search for and classify submarines on their own. They also tracked the subs with the help of radars and sonar equipment," it said.

Besides, the Il-38 crews drilled formation flying and the passage of a prescribed route in pairs as well as flying in the absence of ground radar and navigational aids.

The drill’s main task was to improve the skills of the naval aviation pilots to accomplish missions in difficult Arctic conditions as intended.
