Newport News Shipbuilding Celebrates the Keel-Laying of Aircraft Carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79)
 
Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, today celebrated the keel laying of the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), the second ship of the Gerald R. Ford class. Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of the ship's namesake, the 35th President of the United States, is the ship's sponsor. She declared the keel "truly and fairly laid" via video to signify the ceremonial start of construction.

First Air Strike with GBU-12 Against ISIL in Iraq for French Navy ATL2 Maritime Patrol Aircraft
 
The Marine Nationale (French Navy) announced that one of its Atlantique 2 (ATL 2) Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) taking part in Operation Chammal (name of the French military operationin Iraq against ISIL) hit a target with a GBU-12 laser guided bomb. The strike mission which took place on August 19 2015 was a first for a French Navy MPA during Operation Chammal.

China Commissioned the 19th Type 054A Frigate Handan (579) with PLAN North Sea Fleet
 
According to the official journal of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) the Type 054A (NATO reporting name Jiangkai II class) Frigate Handan (hull number 579), was commissioned on August 19 with China's North Sea Fleet. It is the 19th Type 054A Frigate to join the PLAN. The Frigate keel was laid in September 2013 and launched in July 2014 by Huangpu naval shipyard in Guangzhou, Southern China.

Russian Navy Aircraft Carrier Kuznetsov to Head Back to Northern Fleet Base Following Refit
 
Russia’s sole aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, is getting set to head back to its Northern Fleet base, Navy spokesman and Captain 2nd Rank Andrei Luzik told Russian media on Thursday. As we reported in May, the flagship of the Russian navy went into the dock of a shipyard in north Russia for repairs.

The Belgian Navy announced that the latest addition to its fleet, Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) Pollux (P902) escorted and monitored a Russian Navy submarine and a Silva class tug boat while they were transiting in Belgium's exclusive economic zone (EEZ). According to the Belgian Navy, this was the first operational military mission for the new OPV.

HII to Maintain and Modernize Los Angeles-class Submarine USS Columbus (SSN-762)
 
Huntington Ingalls Industries announced today that its Newport News Shipbuilding division has been awarded a $57.8 million contract to perform planning in support of maintenance and modernization efforts on the submarine USS Columbus (SSN 762). If all contract options are exercised, the total value of the work would be $288 million.

Second Royal Australian Navy Canberra class LHD NUSHIP Adelaide Started Final Sea Trials
 
The second of the Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) ships being built for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) will leave the Williamstown shipyard and head up the eastern coast of NSW to the Jervis Bay area. About 200 BAE Systems employees, equipment/system subcontractors, RAN crew members and representatives from the Department of Defence Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group will be on board to support the trials which are expected to last 10 days.

Kvichak Marine Industries, a Vigor Company, is currently constructing the fourth 44.5’ Response Boat Medium – C (RB-M C) for the New York Police Department Harbor Unit. The first three vessels were delivered in April 2010, August 2012 and April 2013. The RB-M C’s have been providing maritime security and law enforcement along with search and rescue in the New York metropolitan area.

Brian Losey, believe that if women can pass the legendary six-month Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training, they should be allowed to serve.

Irving Shipbuilding of Canada has awarded BAE Systems a contract to deliver up to six modified 25mm Mk 38 Machine Gun Systems for the Royal Canadian Navy's Arctic Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS) program. The award also covers spare parts, technical support, and long-term field support services. Irving Shipbuilding is the prime contractor for the ships and will build them at its Halifax shipyards.

Japan Second Izumo Class Helicopter Destroyer DDH-184 to be Named and Launched August 27
 
A video taken by a Japanese spotter shows the construction on Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) second Izumo-class Helicopter Destroyer DDH-184 is almost complete with the mast now in place. In addition, the JMSDF announced that the vessel will be named and launched in the water at the JMU Japan Marine United Corporation shipyard in Yokohama Isogo during an official ceremony on August 27.

This event marked the first time that an unmanned aircraft inside the chamber was controlled from an external ground control station. Triton's EMC testing will continue for the next eight weeks to verify the aircraft's subsystems can operate without interfering with each other.
